The Spiritual Realm

By Nila, Grade 4, Brisbane

It was a new summer day, and Ellie, Ira, and Nila were playing on the beach. The large waves splashed onto the shore. THUMP! A strange-looking green wand almost hit Ellie on the head but luckily missed. “Hey guys, look what I found!” yelled Ellie. Ira and Nila ran over to look. “WOW!” they said together. “Hey, kids! Time to go home,” said Ira’s mum. Ellie quickly put the wand in her handbag without thinking. When they got to Ira’s new house, they set up a camping tent in the living room with food, water, pillows (for pillow fights), and all the blankets they wanted. The TV was right in front of them so they could stay up watching lots of excellent movies together, such as Bee Movie, Element, Barbie, and IF (Imaginary Friends).

It was another sunny, smiley day. They had gone to the library near Ira’s home. While Nila was walking, she accidentally knocked down a book. When she saw the title, she called Ira and Ellie. They reached Nila, who was sitting down with the book, waiting for them in the library.“O.M.G.,” exclaimed Ira. It was a book about a new realm. On the front cover was a picture of a wand similar to the one Ellie found on the beach. Ira opened the book and found the wand Ellie had found. Ira read the passage out loud so Nila and Ellie could hear. The book said, “This wand belonged to a powerful sorcerer who is said to be the guardian of the spiritual realm, which opens every year.” Ira flipped the page and kept on reading, “The wand chooses its owner itself.” Ellie realized that she was the next guardian of the spiritual realm. Ellie quickly stood up. “I will meet you outside the library,” she said sharply. Ira and Nila briskly followed Ellie but stopped to borrow the book. Ellie impatiently waited for them outside the library. “WHAT TOOK YOU SO LONG?” yelled Ellie. Ira said that they had to borrow the book.

Together, they walked to Ira’s home. When they got to her house, they were tired and decided to rest for the evening. They put on their favourite movie, Over the Moon. They played games but noticed Ellie looked glum all night. The next day, the sun shone upon Ellie’s face as she woke up and could smell her favourite pancake mix from the frying pan. Suddenly, she got a vision of her holding the wand in her hands, with Nila and Ira by her side, helping her. She went to brush her teeth so she could eat breakfast. After she brushed her teeth, she went to the kitchen for pancakes. Ellie, Ira, and Nila ate four pancakes each and walked to the library to find new books about the magic realm. “ARGH! How will I master all these elements in just four weeks?” said Ellie quietly in the library. Ellie had to master six elements (Fire, Water, Air, Earth, Camouflage, and Ice). Ira said she would help her when she needed it. For the rest of the day, Ellie, Nila, and Ira spent studying at the library. At 5:00, it started to get dark, so they left the library and went to Ira’s house. For dinner, Ira’s mum had made spaghetti Bolognese. Nila and Ellie both loved spaghetti Bolognese, so they all had two bowls each. They all felt very tired, so they didn’t watch a movie; they went straight to bed after they brushed their teeth.

A few weeks later, Ellie had mastered all the elements. She was very proud and happy because her friends had helped her learn everything in just three weeks. Ellie got one week off. She studied the wand carefully and realized it was from her Grandma Lu. The week finished in a flash. It was already the 2nd of June, only one more day until she had to unlock the spiritual realm. Ellie was nervous. She practised all the moves very carefully until she knew them by heart. The next day, Ellie wore a special kimono (Japanese dress). Ira and Nila came over to support her just in case. It was 5:55 pm. “Only five more minutes until it is showtime,” said Ira. “WHAT IF I forget something?” yelled Ellie. Ira said that she would do fine. Nila filmed the whole thing so Ellie could see how well she did. Nila showed Ellie the video. Ellie was proud of herself. Ellie became the hero of the town, known as Tsunami. When the school holidays were over, Ellie knew the adventure would always stay in their memories.
