The Ruin of the Taj Mahal

By Aarush, Grade 4, Hamilton (Australia)

It was a beautiful day with birds chirping and people singing, so I decided to visit the Taj Mahal. I got dressed, put on my trusty old cap, and called a taxi, ready for my adventure. As soon as I arrived, I ran with joy, marvelling at the sight of the Taj Mahal. I met many new friends there, which just proved that Agra is a wonderful town. I spent the day walking, running, and eating until something unbelievable happened. I couldn't believe my eyes—a person or an animal was spray painting the Taj Mahal!

I sprinted over there like Sonic the Hedgehog, as fast as the wind (not really). When I reached the spot, I saw the spray paint can fall. I tried to catch the culprit, but they were too fast or too good at hiding. I sighed in frustration. Who could hate the Taj Mahal? As I was pondering this, I heard a voice say, "I see you."I shrieked and jumped in fear, questioning whether this person was stalking me or doing something worse. I started doing karate moves—kicking and punching—to get their attention, but the only attention I got was people laughing and filming me. I feared they would post it on the internet, so I stopped and giggled nervously. While I was laughing, I heard the creepy voice again. I jumped back, my teeth chattering with fear, and then someone pushed me against the spray-painted wall. I felt a sharp pain in my head as if I had cracked my cerebrum. Crying from the pain, I heard eerie noises before collapsing to the ground. About ten minutes later, I found myself in an ambulance with its siren blaring.

At the hospital, I heard a patient in another room screaming and throwing glass at the nurses. One nurse called emergency services, and then the patient knocked the nurse unconscious. I began to wonder why I was there since I felt fine, so I got up from the comfy bed. As soon as I stood, I screamed, "AHHHHHHH!" Several doctors and nurses rushed to check on me. I quickly jumped back into bed, pretending to sleep. They chuckled and said, "Maybe he got a big hit on that wall?"After they left, I noticed a window above me. I jumped as high as I could and opened it, despite the pain in the back of my head. I managed not to scream and escaped. I ran as fast as I could, hoping the nurses or doctors wouldn't suspect anything. I bolted through the plains and hid in the forest, thinking that my running might create wind and blow the grass, which is exactly what happened. A doctor saw the movement and started coming my way. I quickly crossed a clean black road and hid behind a tree. The doctor emerged, shouting, "WHO IS THAT?" I stayed silent until he got tired and returned to the hospital. This was my chance to save the Taj Mahal and nearly all of India!

I ran to the Taj Mahal even faster than Sonic the Hedgehog. Once I arrived, I gasped loudly—Narendra Modi was there, walking on a red pathway, and the Taj Mahal was still covered in spray paint! Unsure of what to do, I ran towards the Taj Mahal and bumped into someone. I felt a "THUD" against my hip but saw no one. I knew it was the culprit, so I jumped and actually caught them! It was like a cuddle, but the important thing was that I caught them. I immediately grabbed my phone and called the police. They arrived within three minutes and arrested the vandal. Narendra Modi spoke to me, saying he was very impressed that I caught the culprit. He had been watching the news and saw me solving the mystery despite my injuries.

Then I remembered the state of the Taj Mahal. I had an idea: I bought some paint from a supermarket and started painting. It took me about 24 hours to finish, but when I was done, I felt proud!
