The Underwater City
By Harshiv, Grade 6, Brisbane (Australia)

While scuba diving on vacation, I discovered an underwater city that had been lost for centuries...
I jolted upstairs to my bedroom, eating my vanilla ice cream when we arrived home. I couldn't stop thinking about it and was desperate to find the mysterious city again. The very next day, my mum and I visited the local library. I was looking for a book about the underwater city, but after hours of searching, I gave up. Then, out of my eye, I spotted a giant blue book behind the counter. I sneaked past the librarian and successfully obtained the book!

That night, I grabbed the book and began reading. Written in bright, gold letters was the title, Wonders of the Lost Civilization. I was reading the book word by word when a small, blue gem appeared in front of my eyes. I stared at it for a few seconds... Suddenly, I time-travelled and landed painfully on the sand. I was at the beach, the very same beach where I discovered the underwater city. "Woah! That blue gem... IS AWESOME!" I shouted excitedly. I was scared to dive into the water without my scuba gear. "I wish I had my gear." I heard a soft 'pop' sound, so I looked around but saw nothing odd. Then I realized I had my scuba gear on. Now I could jump in, no problem at all.

After an hour, I could see several structures in the distance, so I swam faster to see what they were, never paying attention to my oxygen tank... The buildings seemed oddly familiar. "The city!" I began exploring the buildings, peeking through windows and broken rocks. Suddenly, I heard a loud, deafening buzzing noise coming from my oxygen tank. "LOW OXYGEN! LOW OXYGEN! LOW OXYGEN!" I panicked as I searched the city for an air pocket. I was slowly running out of time, but luckily, I managed to find an air pocket to breathe. I had to be very careful and decided not to go anywhere for some time. I had to be really, really careful. "I wish I could return home safely," I said as a small tear went down my face. Then I heard another pop sound, and this time, I saw a new oxygen tank behind my back. I smiled. I decided to abandon my plan of searching for things in the city and began my journey back to the surface.

Only a few meters away from the city, a thought popped into my head... I realized that on my way there, I didn't even see one fish or anything swimming in the ocean. Even when I arrived at the underwater city, there were no signs of life! Not even any coral or kelp on the ground! Just rocks and sand. But how?

Ignoring the disturbing thought, I continued to swim upwards, hoping I would reach the shore soon. An hour later, I reached the surface safely and time-traveled back to the future.
Lucky for him, he escaped the curse of the underwater city in time; otherwise, he would've become the next victim of the ocean...
